2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Overview
The Mazda CX-90 PHEV boasts a spacious interior, sleek design, and plenty of power while still being economical to drive. The plug-in hybrid SUV aims to help drivers slowly adjust to an all-electric future. Buyers can also choose between preferred, premium, and premium plus trims. However, with all the buzz surrounding the 2024 CX-90 PHEV, we wanted to explore the model further.
Sleek Exterior
The CX-90’s sleek exterior begs to be noticed. Mazda’s signature sculpting design reflects and absorbs light, creating a stunning visual effect. An elongated hood may not seem appealing until you look at the SUV. It strives to evoke a sense of strength and presence, and the forward-thinking design delivers.
However, the CX 90 PHEV is available in Rhodium White Premium (+$595) which really makes the vehicle stand out. Other options include, Soul Red Crystal Metallic (+$595), Machine Gray Metallic (+$595), and Artisan Red Premium (+$595).
If you’re not ready to spend a little extra you can select from the following colors with no upcharge: Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Jet Black Mica, Platinum Quartz Metallic, or Sonic Silver Metallic.
Luxurious Interior
Mazda is well-known for its luxurious interiors; the CX-90 PHEV doesn’t disappoint. All three trims come with premium fine leather upholstery with detailed stitching. Drivers and passengers can relax in comfort on short and long rides.
The control buttons are thoughtfully laid out for convenience and to avoid taking away from the interior’s elegance. The controls are buttons instead of a touchscreen. However, when the vehicle is in park, it does offer touchscreen functionality.
As one of the first three-row hybrid SUVs, the Mazda CX-90 PHEV seats up to 7 adults. Compared to the previous CX-9 model, you get around 7.5 inches of additional space. The third row is best suited for smaller children. To ensure everyone’s comfort, it’s often best to fold the third row down to enlarge the cargo area. It turns the SUV into a four- or five-seat vehicle and helps ensure everyone’s comfort. The cargo area measures 14.9 cubic feet. With the third row folded down, you gain much more space as well.
Pricing
The Mazda CX-90 PHEV is a surprisingly affordable luxury hybrid SUV. Pricing starts at $47,445 for the Preferred trim and increases up to $56,950 for the Premium Plus trim. If you are interested in the premium package, you can expect to pay around $52,900.
Additional features will add to the total costs, along with any dealer packages. If you decide to go with a luxury paint option there may also be an upcharge.
It should also be noted that prices can vary by dealership and location. Some drivers may also be eligible for tax credits, which can reduce overall purchasing costs.
Mazda CX-90 PHEV Battery Life and Range
The CX-90 PHEV comes with a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. Without using the combustion engine, the battery provides around 26 miles of range. It has enough power to get you around town without switching to combustion power.
Combining battery and combustion, the CX-90 PHEV has a range of around 490 miles. It gives you a fuel economy rating of 56 MPGe (miles per gallon electric). While it isn’t going to keep you away from the pump, it does significantly reduce your number of trips to the gas station.
The included lithium-ion battery has both a High Voltage Battery Capacity and a High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty. Both warranties are valid for 96 months or 100,000 miles. You may also be able to take advantage of the Transitional Zero Emissions Vehicle (TZEV) High Voltage Battery extended warranty. Your local Mazda dealership will let you know if you are eligible.
Performance
The 2.5-liter engine can go from 0 to 60 in around 6.2 seconds. You get 189 hp from the combustion engine and 173 hp from the battery-powered motor. Combined, you have an impressive 323 hp and 369 lb.-ft of torque. It also has an eight-speed transmission.
Some drivers mention the powertrain feels a little jerky at slower speeds, especially when coming to a stop. However, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV handles beautifully on the highway and can easily tackle corners. A balanced and evenly weighted steering wheel adds to the vehicle’s responsiveness.
The vehicle automatically defaults to the EV motor, so handling can feel a little different at first. The SUV automatically switches to the combustion engine when the battery runs low.
Infotainment and Connectivity
As previously mentioned, the Mazda CX-90 PHEV uses buttons instead of a touchscreen. Since the buttons are thoughtfully located, it doesn’t interfere with ease of use. The Mazda Connect Infotainment System connects seamlessly with iPhones and Androids. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features to easily access playlists, maps, etc. You can choose between a 10.25” and 12.3” color display.
A wireless charging pad between the driver and passenger seats ensures your phone is always ready to go. You can also add a 1500W outlet to charge cameras, laptops, and other devices.
Mazda CX-90 PHEV Safety Features
Safety features include the latch system in the second and third rows for securely anchoring rear and forward-facing child seats. Other safety features include the Smart Brake Support system. It includes a forward-sensing camera and a front radar sensor. When necessary, the front and rear side radar sensors kick on. These sensors detect your proximity to other vehicles and objects and the approaching speed.
